A comparison between the GS1 and NS1

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? GS1 VS. NS1

When choosing your ideal bike, understanding the differences between models and when/where each bike is most capable can make all the difference. There’s also the question of the Quivver Killer: which should you choose if you ride both road and gravel, but only have room in the stable for one bike? Our two most popular models, the GS1 gravel bike and NS1 road bike, are designed for different types of riding, but share more qualities than you might assume. Let’s dive into what sets these bikes apart and which bike may be best for you.

GEOMETRY: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

The difference between the NS1 and the GS1 isn't just their geometry, as both bikes share a surprisingly similar frame design, it’s how they were designed and why. Both the NS1 and the GS1 were designed with a race-first approach, which means both bikes have a slightly more aggressive geometry than you may see when looking at other brands. Our heritage stems from racing and we’ve kept true to that ethos with both bikes, so really the difference is in the details; small changes can make a big difference.

KEY SPECIFICATIONS: NS1 VS. GS1 GEOMETRIES

To give you a clearer picture of how the NS1 and GS1 stack up against each other, we've put together a detailed comparison table below. You can reference these specs to the chart above for better visualization. Here we highlight the key features and measurements that matter most to riders and why.

For simplicity’s sake, we are going to focus on the middle-of-the-line bike size which for us is a size Medium frame (or 54cm). So if you’re between the height of 5’7” to 5’10” this info will be especially pertinent. We’ll discuss detailed sizing in another blog, but right now our focus is all about geometry.

SPECIFICATIONS

CONTEXT. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?

NS1
(MM)

GS1
(MM)

Stack

This provides a more upright riding position, which can increase comfort without compromising control.

536

545

Reach

The NS1's longer reach provides a more stretched-out position for speed and aerodynamics. The GS1's shorter reach creates a more upright position and redistributes weight.

388

384

Head Tube Length

The NS1's longer head tube makes it more responsive. Many gravel bike brands use higher head tubes for comfort, sacrificing control on rough terrain.

134

128

Top Tube Length

The top tube lengths on these bikes are pretty similar, so they'll feel about the same when you're reaching for the handlebars.

552

556

Chainstay Length

The GS1 has longer chainstays which enhances stability, especially on rough terrains.

410

420

Stand-Over Height

The stand-over height refers to the distance between the top tube and the ground when standing over the bike. The GS1's bottom bracket is positioned higher than the NS1's, resulting in a greater stand-over height and providing the rider with increased clearance on uneven terrain.

777

833

Seat Tube Length

The GS1's seat tube is longer than the NS1's. This also contributes to the GS1's higher standover height and affects overall fit.

493

525

Bottom Bracket Drop

Both bikes have similar bottom bracket drops contributing to their overall stability and handling.

69

70

Wheelbase

A longer wheelbase on the GS1 provides better balance and comfort over uneven surfaces. The NS1’s shorter wheel base contributes to its responsiveness.

994

1032

Trail

The NS1's smaller trail measurement makes it less stable on loose surfaces than the GS1, which has a larger trail measurement. This affects the bike's stability and handling.

58.1

74.7/69.9

Seat Tube Angle

The angle of the seat tube affects your pedaling efficiency and position on the bike.. The NS1 has a steeper seat tube angle promoting a more aggressive position.

73°

72.5°

Head Tube Angle

The NS1's steeper head tube angle compared to the GS1 makes it more responsive and quicker to handle on paved roads, which is ideal for road racing. However, this increased responsiveness can be detrimental on gravel, as a "twitchy" bike is more likely to lose tire traction and crash.

IMPORTANT TAKEAWAYS

  • Reach & TopTube: Both bikes are very similar, but the GS1 has a slightly shorter head tube and a longer top tube. This contributes to it's excellent handling and control.

  • Angles & Wheelbase: Seat tube and head tube angles along with wheelbase significantly impact the ride quality.

  • Responsiveness: Ultimately it comes down to responsiveness of each bike and how they respond under different conditions. You want both bikes to be responsive, yes, but as riding conditions change, so too must your riding style.

Tire Clearance: Size Matters

GS1 Gravel Bike: Accommodates tires up to 48c.

NS1 Road Bike: Fits tires up to 35c.

why Clearance Size Matters

Tire size impacts your bike's versatility and performance:

  • Gravel Riding: Wider tires on the GS1 provide better traction and stability on rough terrains, making it ideal for gravel races and off-road adventures. This also allows for lower tire pressure and a more plush ride, however rolling resistance increases.

  • Road Riding: The narrower tires on the NS1 reduce rolling resistance, allowing for faster speeds on smooth pavement.

stand-over height and bottom bracket

The GS1 features a higher stand-over height compared to the NS1, primarily due to its elevated bottom bracket.

Why a higher bottom bracket?

  • Increased Clearance: Helps prevent pedal strikes on rough or uneven terrain.

  • Enhanced Stability: Offers better control when navigating technical sections.

This higher bottom bracket also results in a slightly elevated head tube, contributing to the GS1’s robust, all-terrain character. Think of the GS1 as a 4x4 vehicle, built to tackle diverse landscapes, while the NS1 is your sleek sports car, optimized for speed and agility on paved roads.

NS1 vs. GS1

the verdict: overlapping yet unique

So clearance and geometry is the biggest difference between the GS1 and the NS1, now what do you do with this information?

This means that if you’re comfortable with your road bike fit, transitioning between the NS1 and GS1 should be seamless. For those looking to tweak their road fit to the GS1, we recommend shortening the stem by 1 cm to achieve a similar position. If the fit feels too aggressive—meaning you’re too far forward with not enough stack—you can easily add a 5 to 10 mm spacer to raise your handlebar position.

We also pride ourselves in our customer support and can help answer specific questions about transferring your current bike fit measurements onto a new GS1 or NS1.

While both the GS1 and NS1 share similarities in geometry and fit, they cater to different riding styles and terrains.

CONCLUSION: WHICH IS THE QUIVER KILLER?

At Ventum Racing, we know that every cyclist has unique demands, whether it’s carving through tight crit corners, tackling a gran fondo, or enjoying long, open-road miles with friends. If your focus is on road performance, the NS1 is your weapon of choice—an aero-optimized, all-around road machine that delivers speed and efficiency. But what if you want to explore beyond the pavement?

For riders venturing onto gravel, whether it’s rolling fire roads, a first attempt at Unbound Gravel, or mixed-terrain exploration, the GS1 is the answer. Built for versatility, it thrives on dirt but remains lively on pavement, making it the ultimate all-road companion.

Still deciding? If your rides lean heavily toward road with occasional smooth gravel detours, the NS1 with 35mm treaded tires offers a confidence-inspiring balance of speed and capability. But if you want a true do-it-all machine, the GS1 is the way to go. Pair it with a second wheelset with narrow slicks for dedicated road use, though keep in mind that its gravel-oriented gearing may leave you spun out in fast road races or group rides.

No matter which bike you choose, we have you covered.
